Flexible chain conveyor moves up and down, left and right components | 2021-10-07 | Assembly

The double-chain pallet conveyor belt has long been the preferred conveyor system for asynchronous automated assembly lines. However, this is not the only game in town.

In some cases, flexible chain conveyors, such as Bosch Rexroth’s modular VarioFlow plus, are a better choice for transporting small components or moving large objects on complex routes or through limited space environments.

VarioFlow plus uses a single-strand flat-top chain to transport discs or pallets or directly support workpieces, boxes or tote bags. Although these systems do not provide the same inherent positional stability as dual-track systems, they can be equipped with guide rails to keep the product in place.

One of the main advantages of VarioFlow plus is its ability to transport products up and down slopes and through sharp turns, both of which are an advantage in environments with limited space. These durable systems are also fast. In some applications, the belt speed can reach 60 feet per minute. High-performance variable speed drives can achieve maximum operating efficiency and reduce energy costs.

The motor installation position can be selected on site. Smart connection technology saves assembly time and allows easy conversion and system expansion. The horizontally mounted slide rails minimize wear and ensure reliable assembly and quiet operation. Thanks to the brackets with centering lugs, the ascending and inclined conveyor sections can be constructed easily. Reversible operation is possible.

Conveyors are available in basic aluminum and stainless steel types, which are suitable for applications with high hygiene requirements. The conveyor has six standard widths: 65, 90, 120, 160, 240 and 320 mm.

Conveyor belt components that are subject to constant friction are made of materials that comply with FDA standards. Stainless steel ball bearings are sealed on both sides and are lubricated with special grease that meets FDA standards.

A variety of chains can be provided to suit different applications. Improved sliding characteristics and low-friction materials create a quiet working atmosphere. Fewer joints and rolling friction in the horizontal curve ensure low wear and reduce downtime. A chain with a tensile strength of 1,250 Newtons is provided.

The gray conveyor chain is mainly used to transport products on metal pallets. The gray hides any traces that may be caused by friction with the tray. Splint chains or static friction chains are used to transport products in the ascending or descending section. Roller chains are used for horizontal applications that require stacking.

The components can be directly ridden on the chain, or on the disc or pallet. The disc tray is required in the following situations:

Due to its geometry, the product has no static stability.

Transportation may cause the product location to change.

The surface of the product is very sensitive.

Need to accumulate and the product geometry is not allowed to accumulate.

The parts need to be accurately positioned.

The process is controlled by an automatic identification system.

Disks or pallets can be supplemented with RFID systems for identification, data storage and material flow control. The width of the standard pallet is 135 and 160 mm, and the length does not exceed 500 mm. The conveyor can position the pallet with an accuracy of ±0.15 mm.

If the product is transported directly on the chain, it is important that the center of the product is as close as possible to the center of the chain and has a high inherent stability.

In order to simplify the selection and layout of conveyor modules, engineers can use MTpro planning software to quickly select components, design orders or multi-conveyor systems, and output the results to CAD files.

In the end, the decision between a double-chain conveyor and a single-chain system depends on accuracy. A single-chain system like VarioFlow is good at moving products, but it cannot provide the same accuracy as the dual-track method. The reason for this is that in a dual-track system, the positioning station can actually engage the tray from below with the help of mechanical stops and positioning pins. This precision is not possible when joining pallets from the side, and is required when using a single chain.

How does the digitization of linear motion technology support the road to the factory of the future? Bosch Rexroth's linear motion technology showcased a multi-axis processing system at the exhibition, which showed how users can be accompanied in the five steps of the entire process chain-in order to shorten the time to market and achieve maximum productivity.
